Angelika Tyrone’s work in the arts is in the areas of education, research, curatorial and arts practice; both in Australia and overseas.
Work has involved working on major arts projects and festivals and curating exhibitions in a variety of environments. More recently, she has curated exhibitions of Burmese Buddhist temple art and the art of newly arrived migrants, refugees and asylum seekers in Australia.
She has taught and lectured in visual arts, art history and digital arts in several universities and schools, overseas and in Australia.
Angelika first studied art at the South Australian School of Art, then studied overseas for a Master of Fine Arts and Bachelor of Art History. Her studies towards a PhD at Flinders University (incomplete) were in the area of Aboriginal art; the appropriation of images and cultural intellectual property. Her connections with Trevor Nickolls and his art began in the 1970’s.
Angelika’s arts practice includes creating visual art in the mediums of photography, painting, printmaking and digital imaging. Her work has been exhibited in group and solo exhibitions mostly overseas, some in Australia. Her recent work has been a collaboration with the Persian Calligrapher Homayoun Ajdari resulting in an exhibition at the at the Festival Centre in Adelaide 2009 entitled East-west conversations: an intercultural dialogue.
Angelika’s travels have been an inspiration for her.
Art from around the world interests me. Throughout my travels, I have found art in the smallest and largest of places; in the midst of poverty as well as wealth; in places on the margins and places of power where it has at times served as an expression of power.
